THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST (each Friday in Lent)
FRIDAY, MARCH 19 7:30PM
"I am thirsty." (JOHN 19; 28-29) THE SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH
Let me live before I die.
When Jesus says "I am thirsty," St. John is quick to let us know that we are not talking about ordinary dryness here. Jesus is busy fulfilling scripture. Jesus is letting John's congregation and us, and anyone else who wants to know-that what's happening to him has been in the works for a long time. He is not some second thought God had when plan A did not work out. He has been around since the beginning. He was there when the spirit first mover over the face of the waters. He was there before Abraham, before Moses, before Gabriel ever went to pay a visit to Mary.
What is happening to him now is the last act in a very long drama. He is finishing it up now, and he is thirsty for more than sour wine. Having accepted capitol punishment for the sin of being human, he is now suffering the consequences of that sin. He is cut off from the waters of life. Suffering in any of its many manifestations can leave us "high and dry." What does our Lord's word from the cross teach us about suffering and about living?
We come together Friday evening March 19 at 7:30 to stand at the foot of the cross and hear those words "I thirst" as they call us to an awareness of our own humanity and our destiny with God. Fr. Covington offers us a reflection on these two words and leads us in solemn worship of the feast day of St. Joseph.
