THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST (each Friday in Lent)

FRIDAY, MARCH 12 7:30PM

“Why have you forsaken me” (MATTHEW 27:45-49)

Dear God, don't let me die.

"How could a good God allow such suffering and tragedy to happen?" Within our most recent decade we have heard this question asked over and over again as we witnessed and suffered terrorist attacks, hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes. The real and honest question in our hearts is: "If God were as caring, compassionate, and considerate as well as omnipotent, controlling and powerful as I would be, if I were God, I sure wouldn't allow any suffering, injustice, or tragedy to occur on my watch….if I were God.

But in Jesus' words, "Why have you forsaken me?", we are listening in on the intimate talk within the heart of the Trinity and we discover that God is not like us at all. There is a vast difference between us and the Father. Our meager human analogies that God is like us: caring, compassionate, and considerate, only more so---just won't work when you are face to face with God on the cross. We think that being God means power, power to fix things, complete freedom to do what we want to do, power to make the world work right, for our benefit.

We don't want to hear such terrifying words, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me," because we don't want to know that's the kind of God who, when it gets dark, doesn't immediately switch on the lights, but rather comes and hangs out with us, on the cross, in the dark, and lets us in on the most intimate of conversations within the very heart of the Trinity.

Come be with your neighbors, your family and strangers so that together we may travel in the footsteps of our savior. Let us hear a word of truth as Fr. Covington breaks open this fourth Word from the cross. We will conclude with benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
